Trauma Therapy in Orange County

"Trauma constantly confronts us with our fragility and with man’s inhumanity to man but also with our extraordinary resilience."
Bessel Van Der Kolk

You may be feeling like you can’t move past what has happened to you and it keeps creeping up to take control of you. You just keep feeling stuck. Some days might feel better than others, and then something happens and it feels like you are right back where you started. Sometimes, it can even feel like a PTSD diagnosis is the end of your ability to ever feel normal again.

Trauma focused therapy can help.

Meet Kaylin Zabienski, LMFT. Your therapist for trauma.

Hi, I’m Kaylin and I’m here to help. I’m a trauma therapist in Newport Beach.

As a trauma therapist, I help people who have experienced trauma to work through whatever has happened to them to come to a place of acceptance and start feeling like themselves again.

You didn’t get to choose what happened to you, but you do get to choose to recover from trauma.

My approach to treating trauma

At Messy Authentic Counseling, I use a holistic, whole person approach to treating trauma. I believe in the mind-body connection and will work with you to start to feel safe again, to be able to connect with yourself, your thoughts and feelings.

I use a mindfulness based approach to treat my clients, which means that we will create a safe environment for you to look at your trauma with curiosity and without judgement.

Sometimes it helps to share your trauma story and talk about what happened. Sometimes, it doesn't help and you don't need to. I will never push you too far out of your comfort zone and will remind you that you are in control, unlike when your trauma occurred. I will empower you to take back your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start?

If you are ready to get started, congratulations! This is a wonderful first step in your healing and that is not always easy.  Fill out the contact form below, and we will have a short 10 minute call to go over logistics and to make sure we are a good fit to work together. This is where you can ask me any other questions that are specific to you and your experience.  After that, we will schedule our first 50 minute session together, I will email you the paperwork to fill out before our appointment. I have a paperless practice so everything will be kept secure in my online portal. If you have more questions about what it is like to work with me, check out my blog post, here.

What is mindfulness; how can it help me?

Mindfulness is paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and without judgement. It is a lifestyle practice and ongoing journey. I believe that by being more mindfully aware of our daily lives, we can learn a lot about ourselves. Mindfulness is not only sitting in a forest meditating for 8 hours a day, although that can be part of it if you want it to be.  Mindfulness helps mental health because it allows us to face our demons instead of letting them hide in the dark and control us from behind the scenes.

What is trauma therapy like?

My approach to trauma therapy uses a combination of talk therapy and body-based practices. So often, when we experience trauma, we disconnect from our feelings and bodily sensations and eventually from ourselves. By empowering my clients to take control of telling their story, we create a sense of safety that will help them to reconnect to their bodies and themselves. As we work together to sort through the confusion, fear, and everything else, you will learn to feel safe and in control again.

How do I know you are right for me?

There are many different approaches to therapy. I have found that by helping my clients learn to observe their thoughts without judgment and to stay in the present moment, that they experience relief within a few weeks.  My goal is to create a safe environment where you will feel empowered to tell me anything that comes up- even the ugly, messy parts. By confronting these parts, we are working together to find self acceptance. When you are able to accept yourself as you are, you tend to stop worrying so much about others. As Carl Rogers said, “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I change.”
